Water damage – immediate first steps

Turn off the main water stopcock immediately to stop further water ingress. Switch off the electricity in affected rooms at the fuse box – water and electricity are life-threatening. Remove standing water with a wet-dry vacuum or bucket and lay down towels to limit the spread. Document the damage immediately with photos and videos for your buildings or household contents insurance. If you are a tenant, notify your landlord without delay. Have the affected areas inspected by a specialist for mould risk, as hidden moisture in walls and floors can cause lasting damage.
