Drain smells bad – odour from sink, shower, or kitchen

Unpleasant odours are usually caused by a dried-out or faulty trap (odour seal) that no longer maintains a water barrier. First, run some water down the drain so the trap fills up again. If the smell persists, unscrew the trap beneath the drain, clean it, and check it for leaks. For kitchen drains, regular flushing with hot water and a little washing-up liquid also helps combat grease deposits. Baking soda and vinegar can provide temporary relief, but will not clear stubborn blockages. If the smell is coming from multiple drains at once, there may be a problem with the main house connection – in that case, call a professional.
