Foul Smell from the Drain – Smells of Decay or Sewage

The cause is often a dried-out trap (the water seal is empty) or a build-up of deposits in the pipe. Step 1: Simply run hot water – this immediately refills a dried-out trap (common with rarely used drains). Step 2: Pour 2–3 tablespoons of bicarbonate of soda down the drain, followed by a splash of vinegar – leave to work for 15 minutes, then flush through with hot water. Step 3: If needed, dismantle the trap and clean it thoroughly. If the smell persists, there may be a fault with the vent pipe or drainage system – consult a professional.
