Plumbing & Water

Submersible pump or sewage pump has stopped working

Common causes include a tripped motor protection switch, a blocked pump, or a faulty float switch. Check and reset the fuse and motor protection switch. Before doing anything else, always disconnect the pump from the power supply – water and electricity are a lethal combination. Pull out the pump and check for foreign objects (leaves, sand, hair); remove them carefully. Check that the float switch moves freely. If the cause cannot be clearly identified, or if the pump shows signs of a burning smell, contact an electrician or pump specialist.
