Extension Lead Overloaded – How to Use It Safely

Extension leads and power strips have a maximum load capacity, usually limited to 3,500 watts (16 amps). Do not permanently connect high-powered appliances such as fan heaters, kettles or washing machines to extension leads – these should be plugged directly into a wall socket. Never daisy-chain multiple extension leads together ('cascading'), as this can cause overheating and create a fire hazard. Regularly inspect cables for kinks, chafing or discolouration – replace damaged cables immediately and do not continue using them. Only purchase products with a recognised safety mark such as VDE or GS. If overheating, a burning smell or scorching occurs, unplug the lead immediately and ventilate the area.
