Boot or tailgate won't open

Common causes include a weak vehicle battery (which can no longer power the electric opener), a faulty lock, or a worn cable on the mechanical handle. First check whether other electrical components such as the window switches work normally – if not, the main battery may be weak (try jump-starting or recharging it). Many vehicles have an emergency release inside the boot that can be reached through the rear seat backrest – check the owner's manual. If the tailgate still won't open or the lock is mechanically faulty, a workshop should inspect and if necessary replace the lock.
