Engine Warning Light On – What to Do

The engine warning light (yellow/orange engine symbol) typically indicates a fault in the engine management system, the emissions system (e.g. lambda sensor, particulate filter), or a sensor. Continue driving calmly for now, provided the car is running normally and no red warning lights are on at the same time. First check the fuel cap – if it is not properly closed, it can trigger the light: open and firmly retighten it, and the light will often go out after a few trips. If the light stays on continuously or flickers along with a loss of power, have the car seen to at a garage soon, as only a diagnostic device (OBD reader) can retrieve the exact fault code. Many garages and motor factors will read the fault code free of charge.
