Squealing When Braking – Is It Dangerous?
A squealing noise when braking is often caused by worn brake pads – many pads have a built-in wear indicator that deliberately squeals to signal it is time for a replacement. Less commonly, it is surface rust on the brake disc after the car has been parked for a while, which wears off by itself after a few brake applications. If the squealing stops after 1–2 brief brakings, rust is the likely cause – no action needed. If the noise persists, or is accompanied by grinding, vibration, or pulling to one side, the brake pads need to be inspected urgently. As brakes are a safety-critical component: have worn pads replaced immediately at a qualified garage – if in doubt, do not continue driving.
