Refrigerator: Building Up Ice or No Longer Cooling Properly – What to Do?

Ice build-up is usually caused by a faulty door seal or opening the door too frequently. Check the rubber seal around the door: insert a sheet of paper and close the door – if it slides out easily, the seal is defective and needs to be replaced. Make sure the refrigerator is not placed directly next to a stove or radiator and has at least 5 cm of clearance from the wall. If there is heavy ice build-up, defrost the appliance completely (unplug it and leave the door open). If it still does not cool properly afterwards, the compressor or refrigerant may be faulty – please contact a qualified technician in that case.
