Using a Multimeter Correctly – Basics for Beginners

A multimeter measures voltage (V), current (A), and resistance (Ω) – for everyday use, voltage measurement is usually all you need. Insert the black lead into the COM socket and the red lead into the V/Ω socket. For household mains outlets, select 'AC 750 V' or 'AC 200 V' (depending on the device) – never use the DC range for alternating current. For batteries and rechargeable cells, select 'DC 20 V', holding red to positive and black to negative. Safety note: When taking measurements at a mains outlet, never touch the metal tips of the test leads – only hold the insulated handles. Measurements on fuse boxes or household wiring must be carried out by a qualified electrician.
