Rice cooker: rice turns out mushy or stays undercooked

Common causes: incorrect water-to-rice ratio or rice was not rinsed. Steps: rinse the rice in a sieve under cold water before cooking until the water runs clear – this removes excess starch and prevents mushiness. Standard ratio for white rice: 1 part rice to 1.2–1.5 parts water (depending on the variety). Brown rice and parboiled rice require more water and a longer cooking time – use a dedicated mode if available. Never open the lid during cooking, as steam will escape. After switching off, leave the rice to steam with the lid on for a further 5–10 minutes.
