Internet Connection Very Slow – Causes and Quick Fixes

Slow internet can be caused by your provider, your router, overloaded devices, or outdated cables. Step 1: Run a speed test at fast.com or speedtest.net – ideally via an Ethernet cable connected directly to the router, to rule out Wi-Fi as a factor. Step 2: Compare the result with your contracted speed; if values are consistently and significantly lower, file a complaint with your provider. Step 3: Restart the router and check whether many devices are simultaneously running large downloads or streams. Step 4: Replace old or damaged network cables (LAN/DSL) – kinks or crimps significantly reduce speeds. Step 5: Check your PC or laptop for background programs consuming bandwidth (e.g. cloud backups, updates) – pause them or schedule them for a different time.
